Orange Shirt Day began in British Columbia in 2013 when a residential school survivor, Phyllis Webstad, shared her story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a residential school. Since then, Orange Shirt Day has been an opportunity for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation.

Drawing on his extensive playing experience in his native Tunisia, which included a league championship in 1994-95, Mohamed started coaching Shadow Water Polo athletes in 2016. The fun of the team, the game, the physicality and strategy all contributed to Mohamed’s lifelong love of the sport. Now with players of his own, skills development, building team spirit, and infusing a sense of fun into practice, all make coaching worthwhile. Supporting the vision of Shadow Water Polo Club is Mohamed’s primary focus – to grow the popularity of the sport in Canada, to be a part of and build up the water polo community, specifically among the athletes and parents.

Hailing from Ottawa, Cheryl started coaching with Shadow Water Polo Club in 2017. Outside of coaching, Cheryl is head of Science at Marc Garneau Collegiate and the mother of two active players. As her two kids really developed a love for the game, Cheryl began coaching. Though never having played water polo herself, Cheryl drew on her own athletic experience as a synchronized swimmer and a competitive swimmer with the University of Waterloo Swim Team. Cheryl is primarily focused on the coaching of the Mini Water Polo team and also helps coach the mid-level U13 players. She brings a very simple approach to coaching the younger players – one that builds the foundation for their time with Shadow. “Work hard and have fun!”
